In 2014, India experienced a humiliating series defeat against the Kiwis by a margin of 1-0. After that loss, Sourav Ganguly criticized MS Dhoni. He said that ahead of the 2015 World Cup, Dhoni needs to improve his overseas Test captaincy. Ganguly said: “His (Dhoni’s) Test captaincy has been obnoxious. But changing captains now will unsettle the team.”

Talking to Headlines Today, Ganguly added: “His place is not in doubt in Test cricket, but Dhoni needs to set the overseas record right. If the World Cup was not less than a year away, I would have agreed that Dhoni needed to be removed as captain.” With that series defeat, India lost 10 out of 12 Tests in overseas conditions under MS Dhoni’s leadership.
