According to recent reports, the Indian Cricket Board is planning to introduce an ‘Impact Player’ or a substitute player option. They are looking to use it in the next edition of the Indian T20 League. However, now, they are going to use this in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament along with other domestic tournaments.

Board is considering this concept to make the whole format more attractive and dynamic for players and fans. The Board also sent an official circular to all the states. They wrote: “With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint.”

Here are all the details you need to know about this new concept ‘Impact Player’ from the Indian Cricket Board

Speaking of this concept, it will be a tactical substitute. Before a match, each team needs to name its four subs. One substitution per game can happen before the end of the 14th over. It can happen in either innings or between the innings also.

That sub-player will be eligible to bat or bowl in the match. He can bat or bowl regardless of whether the player replaced has already batted or bowled. It means a sub-player can bat if he replaces a dismissed batter. On the other hand, he can bowl four overs if he replaces a bowler who already completed his four overs.

Any team can use this option only before the 14th over of an innings. It will happen only at the end of an over, between innings, or when a wicket falls. However, now time will tell only if this new concept will bring some creativity and more entertainment for the fans ahead of the next tournaments in India. The official circular further read: “The player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. If a player gets injured while fielding in mid-over, the current playing condition prevails under 24.1 – substitute fielders.”
