Kane Williamson is set to miss the upcoming ODI World Cup due to the knee injury he sustained while fielding in the first match of the Indian Premier League 2023 between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. The New Zealand batter fell down on his knees while saving a boundary against CSK due to which he has also been ruled out of the ongoing tournament.

Williamson has gone back to New Zealand where he will undergo surgery within the next three weeks once the swelling around the knee has reduced. Williamson was bought by GT for INR 2 crore in the 2023 auction. He didn’t come to bat against CSK when Gujarat was chasing the target.

“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab. It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible,” said Williamson after getting ruled out of IPL as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Who will  replace Williamson as the skipper in World Cup

The 32-year-old might take some time to recover from the injury due to which he is unlikely to get featured in the upcoming World Cup that is scheduled to be hosted by India later in the year. Under his captaincy, New Zealand made it into the finals of the 2019 World Cup and almost clinched the title against England in a thrilling final that went on to a super over. However, England won the cup on the basis of boundary count after the super over also ended in a draw.

Tom Latham could be the frontrunner to replace Williamson in the World Cup. Latham will also lead the New Zealand ODI squad in the upcoming series against Pakistan.

“You take Kane the player for a start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it’s a huge spanner in the works for usWe haven’t given up hope that he might be right but at this stage it does look unlikely. Our first thoughts are with Kane at the moment, it’s a tough time for him, it’s not an injury you expect…it hits you pretty hard,” said the New Zealand coach Gary Stead.
