India and New Zealand locked horns in the second T20I of the three-match series in Mount Maunganui. The first game in Wellington was called off due to rain. Not to forget, both teams are coming off after losing the semis of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. Meanwhile, after winning the toss, the home team decided to bowl first. Talking about the visitors, Sanju Samson didn’t play the game.

They opted for the opening pair of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan. The last they opened the batting for India was during the 2016 U19 World Cup in Bangladesh. However, the experiment didn’t work as Pant got out after scoring six off 13 balls. On the other hand, Kishan managed 36 off 31 balls. Shreyas Iyer, who is making a comeback in the format could only manage 13 runs.

The Men In Blue were tottering at 119 runs in 15 overs. However, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav‘s century, India reached 191/6. However, they might have reached over 200 runs if not for Tim Southee’s hat trick in the last over.

India defended the target in style

In reply, the Kiwis were never in the chase. Finn Allen bagged a silver duck while the others failed to maintain the required run rate. Skipper Kane Williamson scored a painful-looking 52-ball 61. Seven batters failed to cross the double-digit mark including three ducks. Talking about Indian bowling, part-timer Deepak Hooda took four wickets while Mohammed Siraj and Yuzvedra Chahal took two each.

Notably, both players didn’t play a single game in the World Cup. Siraj was in the reserves while Chahal could have played in the tournament. Meanwhile, the home team was reduced to 126 all-out in 18.5 overs, losing the game by 65 runs. With this, the Hardik Pandya-led side as taken an unassailable lead of 1-0. The next game will be played on November 22. After the T20Is, both teams will play three-match ODI series. The series will begin on November 25 and conclude on the 30th.
