Australia is currently busy playing a five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka on their home soil. However, after losing the series opener, Sri Lanka made a roaring comeback as they are now leading the series by 2-1 with two games to go.

On 19 June 2022, Lankans defeated the Australians in the third ODI match of the series by six wickets as they chased down the target of 292 runs with ease. Pathum Nissanka’s maiden ODI ton was enough to guide Sri Lanka to win this match. However, Travis Head played a brilliant inning of 70 runs for Australia as they posted 291 runs for six wickets only.

Now, former Australian wicketkeeper batter Adam Gilchrist came up with support for this batter as he found himself as a future opening partner of David Warner.

Travis Head will find a spot at the top of the order.” – Adam Gilchrist

Speaking on SEN WA Breakfast, Gilchrist said that Travis Head will find his spot on the top order for the longer term. He said: “I think longer-term, down the track, probably in the next 12 months or so, Travis Head will find a spot at the top of the order. I think he’ll end up opening regularly in the one-day setup and I think that’s where he’ll be able to provide the most impact on the team. He can get off to a flying start, he can go at as good a clip as anyone but he’s also got a game where he can lay a foundation for the team.”

He also added that Aaron Finch will retire after the ODI World Cup in 2023 and identified Head as a long-term opening batsman in the ODI format. “Finchy will get through to this T20 World Cup, I think Aaron aspires to get to the next 50-over World Cup which I think is in the sub-continent next year, but it wouldn’t be that long after that that Finch would retire if he got that far. So I see Travis Head definitely at the top of the order down the track.” Gilchrist concluded.

Speaking about Head’s form, Head is in a great run of form in recent months. He had a great Ashes series and then scored a hundred in a warm-up match against Sri Lanka’s A-side. In this ongoing series, he smashed 93 runs in two innings, batting in the middle order.
