Ajinkya Rahane recalls an angry incident from the famous Border-Gavaskar series involving Rohit Sharma

India was able to win a historic Test series over Australia by sealing a victory at Gabba in the fourth Test match. After a humiliating defeat in the first Test match, India went on to win this series at a margin of 2-1. In the final Test match, India broke the Gabba jinx as they defeated Australia on their home soil in 2020-21.

Now, a documentary named ‘Bandon Mein Tha Dum’ had been released on Voot, and in that, Ajinkya Rahane was found to recall an event where Rohit Sharma got angry over Shardul Thakur. It was Thakur’s bizarre dismissal despite telling him to finish the game for India while chasing the target of 329 runs.

“I will teach him a lesson” – Rohit Sharma on Shardul Thakur

Speaking about the incident, India was in some trouble as they lost both Mayank Agarwal and Washington Sundar in quick succession. Then, Shardul Thakur was sent to finish the game with Rishabh Pant. But, he played a rash shot and got out after scoring two runs only. It did not go well with Rohit Sharma as Rahane said that Rohit was furious with his dismissal.

Rahane said: “Shardul Thakur was walking in when Washington got out. Rohit told him ‘This is your opportunity of becoming a hero’. And he just nodded and left. Rohit was sitting next to me. He said, ‘“Shardul Thakur was walking in when Washington got out. Rohit told him ‘This is your opportunity of becoming a hero’ And he just nodded and left. Rohit was sitting next to me. He said, ‘let the match get over, let us win, I will teach him a lesson.’ I said, forget it, we’ll see once the match is over.”

Indian spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin also confirmed the incident. He said: “As he was about to go, Rohit said, “Shardul, finish it”. This is exactly what he said, I understand Shardul. He would have imagined… ‘like how Ravi Bhai said, Dhoni hits a six and wins the World Cup’.”

“So inside Shardul’s head, he has already figured out the moment, the commentary, the book the movie, everything. So Shardul’s gone for it, it’s gone to short square leg and got out. And everybody inside is like “What are you doing?” Ashwin concluded.

However, this Shardul dismissal created no problem for India as Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten knock of 89 runs ensured India’s victory at the Gabba in 2020-21.
