The 2022 BMW Open final between Botic van de Zandschulp and Holger Rune was rescheduled for this year’s event in Munich. Van de Zandschulp had to withdraw from the final due to a sore chest at the previous year’s BMW Open when Rune went on to win his first ATP championship. Van de Zandschulp easily defeated Taylor Fritz, 6-4, 7-6(2), to advance to his first season final. Rune defeated Christopher O’Connell at the other end of the draw, defeating the Australian 6-3, 6-2, after holding off each of his eight break points.

The Dutchman was thrilled to have advanced to the Munich final for a second time after defeating an “outstanding” Fritz after his victory against him. He said he was eager for the chance to confront Rune and seek retribution. “Excited to be in the final again. Played a really good match to beat an outstanding Fritz. Looking forward to getting a chance for revenge for last year’s finals against Holger. LET’S GOOOO,” Zandschulp tweeted.

I have very special memories from here: Holger Rune

Van de Zandschulp expressed how much it meant to him to compete in the Munich championship once again after being forced to retire during the final in 2022 in his post-match interview. “It means a lot, especially after last year. I had to retire in the final. I think I have to make something up this year, so let’s hope I can try that tomorrow and we will see,” the 27-year-old asserted.

Holger Rune was thrilled to defeat Christopher O’Connell in Munich and get a victory. “I think today was a good match. I had to be solid. Chris, he played a very good tournament, beating some great players, so I’m very happy,” Rune was quoted as saying in his post-match interview.

Having also advanced to the Monte-Carlo Masters finals during the clay season, the Dane was happy with his performance. He said that he had unique memories from his first championship win in Munich and that he was “super excited” to compete in the final against Botic van de Zandschulp. “It’s been a very good start to the clay season for me and to be able to continue here in Munich means a lot. I have very special memories from here, so super excited for tomorrow,” the 19-year-old added.
