‘Couldn’t believe that this would be our condition….against Bangladesh’- Former India selector reacts to India’s nervy win against Bangladesh

India, a cricketing supergiant is currently going through a tough time. The Rohit Sharma-led side and the Virat Kohli-led side prior to that, have failed to do well in World events.

The Men in Blue are without a World event in more than 9 years when MS Dhoni-led side won the Champions Trophy in 2013. Recently they faced heartbreak in Asia Cup 2022 in UAE and also were thumped by 10 wickets by England in the 20-20 World Cup.

That was not the end of India’s misery as they later lost an ODI series to Bangladesh following their World Cup heartbreak. India however got back to a win in the Test series as they defeated Bangladesh in the first Test.

In the second however it was a tricky situation for Team India as they were looking at the face of defeat in the fourth innings. Ravi Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer however held their nerve and got India across the finish line. The tense situation brought out an unseen reaction from the Indian camp. Former Indian Cricket Board selector, Saba Karim reacted to the visuals from the Indian camp and said the following.

“The win was more like a sense of relief in the dressing room. The run chase that unfolded, everyone seemed to have panicked. The way they shuffled players in the batting order. He [Dravid] and the rest of the players there couldn’t believe that this would be our condition… against Bangladesh because this wasn’t that tough a chase. A 145-run target wasn’t much and this was while chasing on the fourth day, not even Day 5,” he said on the Sony Sports Network.

“The importance of scoring runs in the 4th innings is something else and if the players are averaging better in the 4th innings, you know which cricketers have the skill and the technique. Iyer and Ashwin showed exactly but one thing which is more important than that is whether you have the temperament. Only then can you complete such tricky run chases,” he added.
