In the final of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the four-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with the defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad on Monday, May 29. CSK skipper, MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Over the years, MS Dhoni has excelled at what he does. He sent Shubman Gill, the Orange Cap holder of IPL 2023, back to the pavilion after Gill hit 39 runs in just 20 balls. The incident took place in the first inning’s seventh over. Gill’s outside edge wasn’t able to stop Ravindra Jadeja.

On the other hand, the right-hander, who attempted to drive the ball, came out from the crease. However, that was sufficient for the former captain of India to remove the bails. In the end, the 2018 U19 World Cup champion scored 890 runs to win the Orange Cap. With this, he surpasses Jos Buttler’s 863 runs from the previous season to have the second-most runs in a season.

Notably, Deepak Chahar gave Gill a chance by making a simple error by dropping his catch. At this point, it appeared as though Gill would exact revenge, just as he did against the Mumbai Indians. He was, however, in good form when Dhoni ended his innings with a lightning stumping.

The current final has been postponed a day in the meantime. The game was apparently moved today as a result of the rain that continued on May 28. Dhoni chose to bowl first after winning the toss that took place a while ago. He mentioned the flat wicket. Notably, teams fielding first have lost every time in IPL finals played in odd years.

Playing XI for both sides:

CSK: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Ambati Rayudu, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Tushar Deshpande, 10 Maheesh Theekshana, 11 Matheesha Pathirana

GT: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 B Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 David Miller, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Rahul Tewatia, 9 Noor Ahmed, 10 Mohit Sharma, 11 Mohammed Shami.
