Former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has reportedly reunited with the Chennai franchise albeit in the upcoming South Africa T20 League 2023. Notably, the name of the team hasn’t been disclosed yet. Besides, the franchises are apparently not allowed to reveal their signings as of now. The confidentiality clause from Cricket South Africa (CSA) binds the franchise not to reveal their signings.

However, as reported by Cricbuzz, Du Plessis, who represented Chennai for a lot of years, will play for the team. The former South Africa skipper played for the four-time Indian T20 League winners from 2011 to 2015 and then from 2018 to 2021. The Pretoria-born player was part of the three title-winning seasons in 2011, 2018, and 2021. In late 2015, the Yellow brigade was suspended from the league for two seasons (2016 and 2017) on the counts of spot-fixing and betting.

Faf du Plessis represented the Chennai franchise till last year in the Indian T20 League

During this period, he played for now-defunct Pune. In 2018, he was bought back by his first Indian T20 League team. The right-hander represented the team till last year. Last November, the team had to release him as a cap was applied on the player’s retentions. In other words, only four players could be retained as the Indian Cricket Board wanted to create a level ground for the new teams – Lucknow and Gujarat in the player auction.

The 37-year-old was bought by Bangalore although Chennai tried to pick him up in the auction. He went on to lead the Red Brigade this year. Talking about the South Africa T20 League, the Chennai team owners have bought the Johannesburg franchise. The franchise will announce the name of the team at a later date. O the other hand, the team is also believed to have signed Moeen Ali.

The left-hander already has been part of the Chennai team since 2019 and was one of the four retentions last year. Notably, he was also signed in the International League T20 in the UAE but the 2019 World Cup winner has preferred to play in the South African league.
