Here is the reason behind Pakistan’s five runs penalty against West Indies in the second ODI

Pakistan took an unassailable lead over the West Indies in the three-match ODI series. They defeated them in the first two matches. After a fantastic chase in the series opener, Pakistan also bamboozled the visitors by bundling out them for 155 runs only while chasing a target of 276.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s form has been crucial in recent times as he already smashed a hundred and a 50+ score in respective matches of this series. He is now the first batter in the history of this game to score nine consecutive 50+ scores across all formats. During this streak, he also became the fastest player to score more than 1000 runs as captain in 13 innings by breaking the record of Virat Kohli (17 innings).

However, a bizarre incident happened in the second ODI match as Pakistan gifted five runs to the opposition, courtesy of a rule break by the captain himself while fielding.

No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves

During the second innings of that match, Babar Azam was seen to have picked up one of the gloves of the Pakistan wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan in 29th over. He also used that glove to collect a throw behind the stump. On-field umpires found this incident to be an illegal one and thus, they added five extra runs as a penalty to the West Indies’s total.

As per the Laws of Cricket, 28.1 Protective equipment: ‘No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards. In addition, protection for the hand or fingers may be worn only with the consent of the umpires.’

Out of nowhere, this bizarre incident occurred with the Pakistan skipper and he will look to forget this incident soon. Speaking about the second ODI match, Pakistan scored 275 runs while batting first. But, West Indies failed to chase it down, thanks to a brilliant spell of bowling by Mohammad Nawaz (10-0-19-4). He was the player in the match also. Meanwhile, Pakistan will host West Indies again on the same ground on Sunday (12 June) to have a clean sweep over them.
