Pakistan and New Zealand locked horns in the second and last Test of the series in Karachi. The first game ended in a draw due to bad light. This meant that the winner of the second game would also end up winning the series. The home team needed to win the game as they have lost two home series against Australia and England since March last year.

On the other hand, the Kiwis were looking to create history as they last won a Test series in Pakistan in 1969. Meanwhile, in the game, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a placid wicket in Karachi. Thanks to the contribution of opening batters, Devon Conway and Tom Latham, wicketkeeper batter Tom Blundell, and the last wicket partnership of 104 runs meant that the team reached 449 all-out.

In reply, Pakistan was in a spot of bother as they lost three wickets for 99 runs. However, thanks to Imam-ul-Haq (83), Saud Shakeel’s maiden Test hundred, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s third fifty in the series, and Agha Salman’s 41 made sure the team reached 408 all-out. With this, the Tim Southee-led side didn’t get a huge lead. At this point, the game was easily heading toward a draw.

In the second innings, the World Test Championship 2021 winners played slowly for most parts and it looked like they are also not interested to win the game. However, in the last hour or so on Day Four, the likes of Blundell and Michael Bracewell took the initiative to speed up the game and bring about the chance of forcing a result. Their half-centuries meant that the team declared at 277/5, setting 319 runs to win for the hosts.

Pakistan fought well but the game ended in an agonizing draw

Chasing 319, the home team had a poor start as they lost two wickets for no runs at the end of Day four. Things got worse as they lost three more wickets for 80 runs. However, thanks to former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed’s century and useful contributions from Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman, the team got close. The last batting pair of Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed tried well but the game ended in a draw with only 15 runs left.
