Sri Lanka batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been denied bail after the rape charges were levied on him. It all started after he got arrested for the said crime on November 6, a day after his side played their last game of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022. The 2014 winners left Australia for their nation while Danushka was arrested by the New South Wales Police.

After this, the left-hander has been suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The SLC issued a statement saying that they will take necessary steps to carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense. It added that the organization has a Zero Tolerance policy for misconduct such as this.

“Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket will take the necessary steps to promptly carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense, and, upon conclusion of the aforementioned court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize the said player if found guilty,” stated the cricket board in an official media release.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it adopts a “zero tolerance” policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident,” it added.

The alleged crime happened three days before being reported: New South Wales police

For the unversed, the New South Wales (NSW) police said that the alleged crime happened on November 2. According to them, the victim came forward three days after the incident and reported it.

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022. As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday,” the New South Wales police said in a statement.

Currently, the 31-year-old has been moved to Silverwater prison in Sydney. Meanwhile, netizens have had mixed reactions to the issue so far.
