As the competition enters the league stage’s final phase, IPL 2023 has provided the Indian selectors with an abundance of alternatives. Many of those players have received support from veterans and specialists for the Indian squad for the next T20I series later in the summer. However, there has only been one player who virtually everyone wants on their squad for the next ODI World Cup. Former India cricketer, Suresh Raina was one of the first to support the young Yashasvi Jaiswal for the position, but a recent comment made by Kevin Pietersen about the ODI World Cup put the RR star up against Shubman Gill.

Yashasvi and Gill have both been in outstanding form throughout the current IPL 2023. They are only separated by one run as they both maintain their positions in the running for the Orange Cap, just behind RCB skipper Faf du Plessis. Both have batted 13 times this season and have achieved half-century-plus knocks, including a century apiece. However, Yashasvi’s 575 runs are more than Gill’s 576, which puts Gill in second place. Yashasvi’s higher strike rate of 166.18 compared to Gill’s 146 is the only other difference between them. The opener for the Rajasthan Royals also features a higher percentage of boundaries.

It gives them the composure to be able to perform in the highest intensity of battle: Kevin Pietersen

In a Betway column, Pietersen was all praise for the two young batters, stating that he saw Gill and Yashasvi as the “future of the India top order” before urging the selectors to pick the latter for the ODI World Cup side, setting the two up against one another. The GT star took Shikhar Dhawan’s place as Rohit Sharma’s chosen opening partner in ODIs last year, and he solidified it with a record double tonne in January. The sole effect of Yashasvi’s participation would be to place him in direct rivalry with Gill as India’s third opener.

“We’re seeing the future of the India top order in Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. I would really strongly look at Jaiswal for the 50-over World Cup. I’d blood him and let him go. I think 50 overs is going to be a thing of the past in the not-too-distant future, but I’d get him into the squad straight away. The IPL gives young players three things,” Pietersen wrote in his column.

“Stadiums are full, everything’s busy, and it’s high intensity “If you come through that and tick all three boxes, then you’re destined to play international sport. That’s what I’ve seen from these two youngsters, in particular, they’re stars. They’re not just hit-and-miss cricketers, they’re absolute quality. It gives them the opportunity to play, it gives them the visibility of the fans around the world, and it gives them the composure to be able to perform in the highest intensity of battle,” the 42-year-old asserted.”
