India skipper Rohit Sharma sustained a thumb injury during the second ODI against Bangladesh. He didn’t open the batting and came out to bat after the fall of the seventh wicket. Now, he has been ruled out of the third and last ODI of the series, to be played on December 10. Also, the biggest worry for the team is his availability for the two-match Test series to follow next.

It is now reported that Sharma is set to be ruled out of the series. If that’s the case, the team would have to name a new captain and an opening batter for the series. KL Rahul, who is the vice-captain, is set to lead the team. On the other hand, Abhimanyu Easwaran is set to replace Sharma as an opening batter. The former has been in Bangladesh and is doing well against Bangladesh A.

Abhimanyu Easwaran is likely to join the squad: Indian Cricket Board

An Indian Cricket Board official, in a condition of anonymity, has said that Bengal player, Abhimanyu Easwaran is set to replace Sharma. The official pointed out Easwaran’s performance in the ongoing unofficial Test series against Bangladesh.

“Abhimanyu Easwaran has scored back-to-back hundreds in the ongoing A Test series and is an opener. In all likelihood, he will join the squad in Chattogram after finishing his second A Test in Sylhet,” a senior Indian Cricket Board source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Talking about the Bengal player, he has 77 First Class games and has 5419 runs to his name, averaging 44.41 including 17 tons. He has been part of the Indian Tests squads before but is yet to make his debut. Talking about the series, it will start on December 14 and conclude on the 26th. Both Tests are part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle 2021-23. India is currently in the fourth position. They would love to go up to inch closer to a place in the final
