‘India WC host karne ke laik nahi’ – Fans react as Hyderabad cricket association ask for rescheduling matches in 2023 ODI World Cup

The scheduling of the 2023 ODI World Cup has been a total mess till now. The fact that the World Cup has been scheduled for the October-November window was awful by default, as in India, the months will have some of the biggest festivals like the Navratri, Durga Pooja, and Deepavali. Security concerns have been raised by many hosting boards regarding the matches clashing with festivals.

The initial schedule for the 2023 ODI World Cup was released on the 27th of June. On the 26th of July, the Gujarat Cricket Association requested a change of schedule, as Ahmedabad police reported security issues due to the India vs Pakistan match clashing with the Navratri festival. The organizers had a reason to reschedule the matches for the same reason.

Security concerns for 2023 ODI World Cup matches

On the 5th of August earlier this month, the Bengal cricket association also announced that there would be an issue for security for the England vs Pakistan match, as the match between the two teams clashed with Kali Puja in Kolkata. When the police raised their concerns about the two matches, there was no option but to reschedule some of the matches.

The updated schedule of the 2023 ODI World Cup was announced on the 9th of August, as 9 matches were rescheduled. After 11 days after the announcement, the Hyderabad Cricket Association has come up with its security issues, as two matches – New Zealand vs the Netherlands and Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, are on back-to-back days, on the 9th and 10th of October respectively.

It is a brain faded decision from the organizers that they did not look at the fact that Hyderabad could potentially host two matches in a row. The schedule should have been designed in such a way that the stadiums were given enough time for preparation. Unfortunately, it looks like the schedule might have some changes yet again, or Hyderabad might lose one of the matches. Regardless, the organizers have messed up with the schedule, big time.
