In the 70th and last match of the league stage of the Indian T20 League 2022, Hyderabad and Punjab squared off against each other at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match was nothing but a formality as it bore no significance to the tournament.

Hyderabad won the toss in the match and the acting captain Buhvneswar Kumar decided to bat first. Their start was weakened by the loss of Priyam Garg (4 of 7)  in the third over of the innings. Rahul Tripathi joined Abhishek Sharma in the middle and the duo stitched a partnership of 47 runs to steady the Hyderabad innings. Tripathi (20 of 18) was the second wicket to fall for Hyderabad at a score of 61 runs in the ninth over of the innings. This started a mini-collapse for Hyderabad in which they lost 4 wickets for 35 runs. Sharma (43 of 32) was one of these four wickets being dismissed by Harpreet Brar in the 11th over of the innings. Hyderabad was 96 for 5 in 14.4 overs when Washington Sundar and Romario Shepherd started the repair work for the team. They formed a partnership of 58 runs and ensure that the team gets to a par total at the end of the 20 overs. Sundar scored 25 runs off 19 deliveries, while Shepherd remained unbeaten on 26 off 15 balls. On the back of the batting antics of the dup Hyderabad was able to post a total of 157 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Harpreet Brar was the bowler with the best figures for Punjab with 3 wickets for 26 runs from his four overs.

While chasing a moderate total Punjab made a blazing start as opener Jonny Bairstow (23 of 15) came out with a go for the kill attitude, But he was dismissed in the third over of the innings when the team’s score was 28 runs. Sharukh Khan replaced Bairstow in the middle and continued the momentum for his team. He also went all guns blazing before being dismissed by Umran Malik in the seventh over of the innings for 19 runs off 10 balls. Shikhar Dhawan however was batting steadily at the other end and looked determined to guide his team home. Mayank Agarwal (1 of 4) failed to impact the scorecard as he was dismissed by Washington Sundar in the eighth over of the innings. This brought Liam Livingstone in the middle and he tore apart the Hyderabad bowling fromthere’s the very beginning of his innings making the target appear with each passing delivery. In their way to victory Punjab lost Dhawan (39 of 32) and Jitesh Sharma (19 of 7) , but they ultimately reached the target quite comfortably courtesy of Liam Livingstone (49 of 22). Punjab won the match by 5 wickets with 4.5 overs remaining in the match. With the win Mayank Agarwal’s side finished the tournament with 7 wins while Hyderabad lost 8 of their 14 matches.
