England skipper Ben Stokes had been voted as the Test player of the year for 2022. Last year, he replaced Joe Root as Test skipper, who was having a horrendous time as a leader since February 2021. Not to forget, under Root, the Three Lions could only win two games from February 2021 to March last year. The right-hander duly resigned from the job.
Since then, the former World Number One Test side has lost only one game under Ben Stokes. The loss came against South Africa at the end of the English summer. Since June last year, the team cleanly swept New Zealand at home and cleanly swept Pakistan in their backyard. With the series wins against the Kiwis, the Proteas, and Pakistan, the European side has ended their World Test Championship cycle 2021-23 on a high.
Talking about batting, Stokes scored 870 runs at an average of 36.25 and 26 wickets at an average of 31.19.
Ben Stokes retired from ODIs and won the 20-20 World Cup last year
Notably, the all-rounder announced his retirement from the ODI format ahead of the home series against South Africa. He cited a busy schedule and inability to keep playing all forms of the game. On the other hand, he helped his side win their second 20-20 World Cup title after 2010 by beating Pakistan in the final.
In the title clash, he scored an unbeaten fifty to take his side home. With this, he is now a two-time World Cup winner, having won the 2019 ODI World Cup. Not to forget, the New Zealand-born player was also instrumental in the 2019 win. Meanwhile, the fans aren’t happy with him being voted as the Test player of the year.
