Last year, Kane Williamson was retained by the Hyderabad franchise for 14 crore INR for the Indian T20 League 2022. He continued to lead the team after him being appointed in the middle of the 2021 season. However, the New Zealand skipper couldn’t justify his price tag with the bat or with his leadership skills. In the 14 games played by Hyderabad, they could only win six games.

Notably, the 2016 winners had won five back-to-back games during the league stage and were looking likely to get into the playoffs. However, that didn’t happen and the team finished eighth. Months after this, the franchise decided not to retain Williamson. After the release, the Kiwi decided to pen down an emotional note for the team. In the note, he mentioned his incredible journey that started in 2014 when he joined the team.

“To the franchise, my teammates, the staff and the always amazing #orangearmy – thank you for making it an enjoyable 8 years. This team and the city of Hyderabad will always be very special to me 🧡.” the right-hander wrote.

14 crore was huge money for a foreign player: Tom Moody

Former Hyderabad coach, Moody pondered upon the decision of Hyderabad to release Kane. The former said that a sum of 14 crores is too big for a foreign player. On the other hand, the former Australia pacer maintained the same amount won’t be a big deal for an Indian player.

“I totally get the decision on the basis of the 14 crore, that’s a huge amount of money, particularly for a foreign player. For an Indian player? Certainly not. And we have always got to look at that kind of relationship between the supply and demand of your overseas players against the supply and demand of your high quality Indian players. And you’re always going to have to pay, and quite rightly so, pay big money for your top Indian players.”
