Kane Williamson surpassed Ross Taylor to become New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in Tests during the ongoing 2nd Test against England. Batting at 25 at the start of Day 4, the Kiwi batter needed just 3 runs to get past Ross Taylor’s mammoth record of 7683 runs. Williamson did one better as he hit English pacer James Anderson for a boundary towards the mid-wicket to set the new record.

Williamson was not done yet as the batter went on to score 132 runs off 282 deliveries. This was his first Test century in the New Year after three consecutive innings of being unable to get to double digits. Notably, the former Kiwi skipper got to the landmark after hitting Stuart Board for a boundary behind the point, whilst batting at 99 off 225 balls.

Ross Taylor congratulated Kane Williamson on his new record

Ross Taylor himself took to Twitter to acknowledge the Kiwi batter’s heroics with the bat. “Congratulations Kane for becoming NZ’s highest Test run-scorer. This achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication to Test Cricket, of which I was privy to for a number of years. Here’s to many more,” Taylor tweeted.

Speaking of the game, the Black Caps won the toss and decided to bowl first. However, the English batter posted a mammoth 435/8 before declaring their innings. Harry Brook’s 186 off 176 and Joe Root’s unbeaten 153 off 224 were the key contributions that helped England get to a massive first-innings total.

In reply, the Kiwis were all out for 209 inside 54 overs. Skipper Tim Southee’s fighting knock of 73 off just 49 deliveries resulted importantly for the Kiwis who were forced to follow on. This time, however, it was a different story. Opener Tom Latham and Devon Conway, both scored fifties to set the foundation for the Kiwis. Kane Williamson, at number 3, scored a memorable hundred whereas Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell scored fifties to post a strong middle-order performance. They reached 483 setting England a tricky target of 258 runs in the final innings. England are batting at 48/1 at stumps on Day 4, promising an exciting final Day.
