The Women’s Indian T20 League has gained traction since its announcement in September 2022 by former Indian Cricket Board President Sourav Ganguly. There has been much speculation about the possible teams in the tournament, and a coach of an Indian T20 League franchise has dropped a significant hint on the subject.

Mike Hesson, the director of cricket for the Bangalore team, posted an interesting story on his Instagram account from the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where team scouts were watching the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy between Tripura and Himachal Pradesh. In the story, Hesson mentioned how team scouts are keeping a close eye on the marquee women’s domestic tournament.

As for Ganguly’s announcement, he informed state associations that the Indian Cricket Board has scheduled the Women’s Indian T20 League for early next year. “The BCCI is currently working in the much-awaited women’s IPL. We are expecting to start the first season early next year,” Ganguly wrote.

The long-awaited women’s tournament will feature five teams and will begin immediately after the Women’s 20-20 World Cup concludes on February 26 in South Africa. The Indian Cricket Board hopes to play 22 matches, with each squad consisting of 18 players, with a maximum of six from outside India. Only five overseas players can play in any game, with four coming from Full Member countries and one from an Associate nation.

During the league phase, each team will face the other teams twice, with the league leader advancing to the finals. After the league stage, the second finalist will be determined by an Eliminator between the second and third-ranked teams. The Indian Cricket Board has not released the tournament’s schedule, but it will conclude before the men’s tournament begins at the end of March 2023.

In addition, the Indian Cricket Board is launching a girls’ Under-15 ODI tournament. “We are glad to introduce a girl’s U15 One Day tournament from this season. Women’s cricket has seen phenomenal growth across the world and our national team has been performing well,” Ganguly said.
