Former India skipper Mithali Raj has advised the team to look to win the upcoming 20-20 World Cup 2023. Recently, India U19 Women’s side won the inaugural 20-20 World Cup in South Africa. As the upcoming tournament will also be played in the rainbow nation, the expectations have risen. Apart from this, the finalization of the Women’s Indian T20 League’s five teams has given a new life to the women’s game in India.

Meanwhile, the former India skipper has said that the recent colts World Cup has shown the level of talent in India. The six ODI World Cup veteran also mentioned that the players can be groomed in the next few years and can become a force. The right-hander added that the parents of the next generation of women cricketers will now be assured while sending their kids to the academy

“This U-19 World Cup title showed there is talent at that level. The potential is so much that it can be groomed and in a couple of years or three years with the WPL, we can say Australia – who have been dominant through the years – have a serious contender. Earlier, people used to say there is not much of a talent pool. And I would say at the senior level, there is a limited talent pool. But with the WPL and franchises coming in, the scouting will start and parents will also get assurance that even at Under-19 level, their kids can represent India,” she said.

We have reached a stage where playing knockouts isn’t enough: Mithali Raj

India will start their World Cup campaign against Pakistan. Ahead of the game, Raj has said that that the national side has reached a stage where playing a knockout is not enough.

“Yes. We have reached a stage where reaching the knockouts is not enough. If you were to compare ourselves with the rest of the world other than Australia and England or even New Zealand, there are other teams who are at a stage where we were a few years back. If we are getting all the facilities — hike in match fees, getting the camps we required and going early to acclimatise, then yes. The expectations will once increase. People will not be content with just playing the semi-finals and final. They will be expected to win,” she added.
