Australia and New Zealand locked horns in the Super 12 round of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The home team won the toss and elected to field first. However, the decision was proved by the Kiwis’ batting. It all started with Finn Allen scoring 42 of just 16 balls in his first game of a World Championship. He bashed the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins, etc.

Allen was undone by the fantastic yorker from Hazlewood in the fifth over of the innings. However, the former’s opening partner, Devon Conway continued the good work done by the youngster. Conway was ably supported by his skipper Kane Williamson who has been out of touch with the bat this year. The Kiwi skipper scored run-a-ball 23 and kept rotating the strike at will. He stitched a partnership of 69 runs with Devon.

Glenn Phillips came and scored a quick 10-ball 12 runs before a good short from Hazlewood undid the former. The likes of James Neesham (26*) and Conway (92*) took the team to 200/3 at the end of the innings. Notably, this is by far the highest total of the tournament so far.

Australia had no answer to disciplined New Zealand bowling

In reply, the defending champions had a poor start as they lost the wicket of David Warner in the second over. The left-hander tried to play a pick-up pull shot against Tim Southee. Warner couldn’t middle the ball and the ball rolled to the stumps. This was the start of Australia’s downfall. Even though skipper Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh tried to up the ante, the latter was caught at covers by his opposite number.

After this, the Blackcaps kept picking regular wickets to squeeze their opposition. The likes of Tim Southee and Micthell Santner took three wickets each. On the other hand, Trent Boult took two while Lockie Ferguson and Ish Sodhi took one each. They bowled out the opposition on 111, winning the game by 89 runs.
