India had a forgettable Asia Cup campaign as they failed to qualify for the final. India won the first two matches. But, in the ‘Super Four’ stage, they won only against Hong Kong. However, now they will look to do well in the upcoming 20-20 World Cup in Australia. Meanwhile, for the event, India announced their 15-member squad on 12 September 2022.

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel made a comeback to the team after their injury setbacks. After India’s dismal bowling performance in the Asia Cup, Mohammed Shami also got a call-up to the team. But, fans were surprised with some players got selected over some other deserving candidates.

Here are the reasons why Indian selectors went with such a squad for the 20-20 World Cup

Arshdeep Singh

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel are back on the team. Now, Bhuvneshwar Kumar along with them will be the front-three bowlers for India. For a backup, selectors went with Arshdeep over Depak Chahar and Avesh Khan. Speaking of performances, Arshdeep showed great composure while he bowled the last overs against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Deepak Chahar is just coming back from injury while Avesh had a very poor Asia Cup. However, Deepak Chahar got selected as one of the four stand-by players.

Mohammed Shami

As Jasprit Bumrah is making a comeback from an injury. Hence, his fitness will be a concern. Therefore, selectors went with Shami for a backup. After last year’s 20-20 World Cup, Shami has not played for India in this shortest format of the game. Still, he can be a lethal option to have for Rohit Sharma because of his vast experience. Both Shami and Bumrah will be a part of the home T20I series against Australia and South Africa before the mega event.

Deepak Hooda

This batter had a very poor Asia Cup. India tried him as a finisher instead of playing Dinesh Karthik. But, he failed to deliver. Still, selectors showed faith in him. Ahead of the World Cup, Ravindra Jadeja got ruled out for his knee injury. Therefore, with his bowling ability, he can be a good option for Rohit Sharma in Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Fans were in shock when they saw that India went with Ravichandran Ashwin over Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi performed well in recent times and leg spinners have been a good option in the T20 format. Still, selectors thought that he can be a better option than Bishnoi on the bouncy wickets of Australia. With his varieties and spin, India can use him to restrict the opposition’s score during the middle or death overs.
