Before Friday’s important Qualifier 2 against Mumbai, Shubman Gill had been in outstanding form for GT this season of the Indian Premier League, scoring 722 runs in 15 matches. In the opening two overs of the match, the 23-year-old who was pursuing the Orange Cap managed to take it away from Faf du Plessis (730 runs).

What came next was absolute carnage from Gill as he put the MI bowlers to the sword and developed a particular fondness for individuals like Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, and Akash Madhwal. To reach his third hundred of the season, Gill swiftly changed gears after passing the 800-run threshold. He continued to play his shots freely and wouldn’t stop there.

Shubman Gill now has 851 runs in IPL 2023

As GT scored 233 runs in their 20 overs, Gill would end up batting 129 from just 60 balls. His innings included seven boundaries and ten huge sixes. In the end, GT ended up winning the game by 62 runs and Gill was awarded the Player of the Match award. With the same, he became the youngest batter in the history of the competition to receive 10 Player of the Match awards, smashing yet another record in a terrific season.

The GT’s opening batter has been lauded by everyone, with participation from Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, and Virender Sehwag. With a photo of Gill and a star emoji, Kohli shared a story on Instagram. Gill’s consistency and hunger were praised by Sehwag, who was in awe of Gill. “What a player. 3rd hundred in 4 matches and some breathtaking shots. Amazing consistency and hunger, the kind of stuff big players do, cash in on the purple patch,” Sehwag stated. After Gill’s knock on Friday, Yuvraj lauded him as the next prince of Indian cricket. “Another great innings by the new prince of Indian cricket !! @ShubmanGill,” Yuvraj tweeted.

After his defeat of MI, Gill now appears to have a good chance of winning the Orange Cap. He is currently at 851 runs for the season, the following batter alive in the competition after Gill in Chennai Super Kings’ Devon Conway on 625.
