India is currently busy playing in Zimbabwe in the three-match ODI series. Senior players took a rest from this ongoing series. Hence, players like Shubman Gill got the opportunity to open the innings for India once again. However, he nailed that role during the three-match ODI series against West Indies.

Even, in the first ODI match against Zimbabwe, he remained not out on 82 runs while chasing the target of 190 runs. Now, former India cricketer Saba Karim opened up on the plan of the Indian cricket team management regarding Shubman Gill. He revealed the factors which the Indian team is looking for in him ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

India’s selectors and team management are looking for a backup opener for the 2023 World Cup,” – Saba Karim on Shubman Gill

Speaking to India News, Saba Karim said that the team management is looking for backup openers ahead of the 50-over format World Cup in 2023. Therefore, Shubman Gill got the opportunity to open the innings again in the first match of the series ahead of KL Rahul. He said: “KL Rahul’s place at this time is No.4. This is the reason Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill opened the batting. India’s selectors and team management are looking for a backup opener for the 2023 World Cup,”

He also praised Gill for showing his temperament during his innings in both West Indies and Zimbabwe. He added: “Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will serve as front-line openers, while Gill can fulfill the role of a backup opener. It is very difficult to play across three formats with the right technique, but Gill possesses all those elements. His temperament is good. He had to go through tough challenges where he scored runs.”

Meanwhile, Saba Karim also said that the Indian team management might ook him as a three-format batter for his overall abilities. “This is a good phase for Shubman and I think the team management has marked him as a player who can play all three formats, which is a big thing,” Karim concluded.
