On 27 July 2022, India managed to clean sweep West Indies in the three-match ODI series. After winning two nail-bitting matches, India won the last match convincingly. Star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were rested in this series. Hence, Shubman Gill got the chance to play as an opener with skipper, Shikhar Dhawan.

Meanwhile, Gill grabbed the opportunity with both hands as he smashed two half-centuries in three matches. He also became the player of the series for scoring the most number of runs (205 runs). In the third ODI, he score an unbeaten 98* runs as he won the player of the match award also. Then, Shikhar Dhawan came up with a huge compliment for this young batter by comparing him with a star India batter.

“I think Shubman Gill has got a bit of a Rohit touch in him.” – Shikhar Dhawan

During the post-presentation of the third ODI match, Indian skipper, Shikhar Dhawan heaped high praises on Gill. He compared Gill’s batting style with veteran batter, Rohit Sharma. He said: “He (Gill) has got a very good technique and he is a very classy player. I think he has got a bit of a Rohit touch in him. He seems to have a lot of time the way he bats. Good to see that he scored 98 today. He knew how to convert those fifties into 90s,”

Dhawan also lauded the bowling performance of Siraj and all-rounder Deepak Hooda. “Siraj is a quality bowler. His self-belief has increased a lot. He knows what he has to do. He backs himself. So as a captain it becomes easy for me. It feels good to see as a skipper that the boys know what to do, they know their responsibilities.” Dhawan added.

Shikhar Dhawan also expressed his gratitude to the existing domestic and the Indian T20 League for the growth of young players. ”The ways the boys are responding, they are young but are quite mature and sensible. They can handle the pressure quite nicely. Thanks to our domestic cricket and Indian T20 League because of that exposure, the transition to international cricket becomes quite easy. Hats off to all the boys. They have been very disciplined and quite practical” Dhawan concluded.
