After wrapping the historical ODI series over Australia in the fourth ODI, Sri Lanka faced Australia for the fifth ODI on 24 June 2022. However, in favor of the host, the series ended with a 3-2 scoreline as Sri Lanka failed to win the last match. Kusal Mendis was awarded the player of the series award for being the top-run scorer (249 runs) in five matches at an average of 83.

However, Sri Lankan fans showed a grand gesture to Australia and its players after the completion of the match. It had been observed that all supports turned yellow and chanted “Australia, Australia”. The heartfelt moment’s video had been shared by cricket.com.au on its Twitter account.

“That was one of the most special feelings” – Glenn Maxwell

Speaking about this heartwarming gesture, Australian players like Glenn Maxwell shared their views on it after the match. He said: “That was pretty extraordinary and I was just saying to the boys, that was one of the most feelings. Being able to walk around the ground and have a foreign country all cheer for you”

The Australian all-around also added that there were no more Australian fans and still, this amount of support from them was quite extraordinary. “A lot of times when Australia tours, we are generally the enemy and there are not many Australian fans in the stands. But to have the support and fans that are here at the moment is truly extraordinary,” he added.

Maxwell also said about the tough times that Sri Lanka locals had in recent times and hopefully, both these teams could entertain them through this ODI series. “Everyone is wearing yellow and They have got all the Australian flags all over the place. It is extremely special and it is a credit to everyone that has been able to get out here. It has been such a tough time obviously for the locals and for them to come out and support us and hopefully, both teams can entertain them and they have had a very good time during the One-Day series.” Maxwell concluded.
