The third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to begin on 31st July 2022. Like the previous two seasons, five teams will compete in this exciting tournament. However, the player’s draft for this upcoming edition is set to take place on 5th July 2022. A total number of 353 players will be drafted.

Among them, 180 foreign players and 173 Sri Lankan players will be drafted. All First Class, Internationals, and Ex-Internationals players will participate in this year’s LPL. Both the LPL Governance Committee and the Franchise Owners ( Management and Coaches) will participate in the virtual event at 5 P.M.

Jaffna Kings will look to win the tournament for the third time in a row

The scheduled player’s draft event will be divided into 20 rounds where players will be considered from different categories. Several categories are ‘International Ruby,’ ‘International Sapphire,’ ‘International Diamond ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘International Platinum’. Two players from the Under-23 category are a must for each team when they will build their squad for the upcoming season.

Each Team will have the liberty to get 20 players. Among them, 14 should be Sri Lankans and six others need to be from other International countries. However, teams are also allowed to retain a maximum number of six players from their previous squad (four Sri Lankans and two other Internationals).

Even, teams can have two Sri Lankans and two Internationals before the draft by signing them directly. Then, other players need to be selected from the draft event. The tournament will continue from 31 July to 21 August 2022. Jaffna Kings, Kandy Warriors, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Giants, and Colombo Stars are the five teams participating in the tournament. All matches will be played in two venues,  the MRICS in Hambantota and the RPICS in Colombo.

Speaking about this tournament’s history, Jaffna Kings won the previous two editions consecutively. Hence, they will look to win it three times in a row when this year’s edition will kick off on 31 July 2022.
