India crashed out of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 on the back of a humiliating defeat against England in the semi-finals who crushed the Men in Blue with 10 wickets to spare. As things stand, many claimed that sitting out Yuzvendra Chahal for the tournament despite having him in the squad was a wrong call.

Veteran Indian cricket, Amit Mishra, opened up on the issue and said that India need to figure out whom to add and whom to leave out, given that there is a severe crisis for a leg spinner. Notably, India do not have a lot of leg spin options and Chahal stands out to be the best at the moment, in the shortest format of the game in specific.

I was a little surprised: Amit Mishra

Saying that he was surprised on seeing Chahal on the bench, Mishra claimed that it was unwanted by the Indian think tank to keep him out of the playing XI in the multinational tournament when the likes of Shadab Khan and Adil Rashid tasted huge success. Further, Mishra said that it was important for India to play proper spinners, given that the English camp succeeded mostly because of Rashid’s bowling in the middle overs.

“It’s absolutely true. I had once raised this topic but they silenced me. Picking a bowler on the assumption that he will bat and score runs is no benchmark for an all-rounder. How many all-rounders do India have? You say that we have Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja who bowls and bats both. Ashwin too can bat and as can Axar Patel. How many all-rounders do you need?” Mishra was quoted as saying.

“Every team has 2 all-rounders along with part-time bowlers and a main leg-spinner who can take wickets. Bowlers win you matches. Till the time you don’t take wickets, how will you win a match? Even if you score 300 runs, but if you don’t have wicket-taking and main bowlers, there is no way you can win a game,” said the lep spinner further.
