The Delhi team couldn’t live up to the standards they set in the last three seasons of the Indian T20 League. This season, they finished fifth in the points table after losing seven games out of 14 games. They needed to win their last game against Mumbai to qualify for the playoffs but failed to do so. With this, they have finished outside of the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

One of the reasons for the team’s fate this year is failing to put together consecutive wins for a major part of the tournament. Another reason for that was the batting department was highly dependent on the opening batters. Skipper Rishabh Pant couldn’t capitalize on his starts, they didn’t have a player to zero in for the number three position before Mitchell Marsh‘s arrival. In this listicle, we will discuss the players who might be released next year by the franchise.

Three players who might be released next year

  1. Anrich Nortje

The South African pacer made his comeback in competitive cricket during the 15th season of the cash-rich league. Before this, he played for his national side in the 20-20 World Cup last year. Nortje got injured ahead of South Africa’s home series against India. Since then, he didn’t play any form of the game. His national board didn’t allow him to play the league before making sure that he is fully recovered. His comeback wasn’t a fruitful one for him and the team. The right-arm bowler could play only six games and picked up just nine wickets. While, his average (24.11) and strike rate (14.89) were good, his economy rate (9.72) let his team down.

2. Mandeep Singh

The franchise signing him in the auction this year was a surprise for the fans given his poor record in the last couple of season. While playing for Punjab in 2020 and 2021, he averaged 21.66 and 15 respectively. This year, his average was six while playing three games which wasn’t a surprise. He might definitely be released next year as the team would like to invest in strong middle-order batter, who might be a local player.

3. Tim Siefert

The Kiwi player only played two games but looked out of sorts apart from the match against Mumbai. In that game, he scored a quick 21 before his inning was cut short. He was given the opportunity to open the innings in the absence of David Warner, who was on national duties. After Warner came back, Siefert had to make way and didn’t play a game after that.
