The formal announcement of Gable Steveson’s comeback to amateur wrestling competition was made on Tuesday night. Steveson enrolled for the U.S. Open, which will take place later this month, according to a statement from Team USA. The U.S. Open is the initial qualification event for the summer of 2016 U.S.

Olympic trials. Steveson expressed interest in competing at the 2024 Olympic Games and winning a second gold medal, as was previously reported, in an interview with “MMA Fighting” in March. In the 125 kg freestyle wrestling division, the WWE superstar earned his first gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

He will resume fighting as a “representative of the Gopher Wrestling Club, Minnesota’s regional training center for foreign styles,” according to the press release. Steveson, a former Gopher, earned several honors for amateur wrestling as a student at the University of Minnesota, including two NCAA championships, three Big Ten crowns, and two Dan Hodge trophies.

Steveson entered into the first-ever exclusive NIL pact with WWE back in September 2021, yet he has not yet made his WWE in-ring debut. On the other side, his brother Bobby Steveson, a former wrestler with the Diamond Mine stable, is presently competing in “NXT” under the ring name Damon Kemp.

At the University of Minnesota, Steveson had an 85-2 record and two NCAA championships. He earned the gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in addition to winning the Dan Hodge award thrice. He finished his career by leaving his shoes on the mat after his final match at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The U.S. Open is the first opportunity to potentially qualify for the 2024 summer U.S. Olympic Trials.

During a brief on-screen appearance at WWE Summer Slam 2021, Steveson signed a WWE NIL contract and was chosen as a member of the WWE RAW roster in the 2021 WWE Draft. He made an appearance at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, when on the second night of the event, he suplexed Chad Gable. On the December 9, 2022, episode of WWE SmackDown, Steveson made an appearance with Kurt Angle, a member of the WWE Hall of Fame.
