On 29 July 2022, the stage was set for India and Australia’s women to kick off the T20I tournament in the Commonwealth Games 2022. This is the first time when Women’s cricket has been added to this mega event. However, India dealt with a major blow before the tournament. Their two big players tested Covid-19 positive. Hence, they stayed back in India for serving the quarantine period.

On the other hand, Australia will be the favourite to win this tournament. Now speaking of the match, India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first. While batting first, Shefali Verma started the innings in some style. She scored a quickfire 48 runs knock-off 33 balls. Other batters chipped in with some contributions also. However, Harmanpreet Kaur continued her dream run with the bat. She was the highest scorer for India with 52 runs from 32 balls, including eight fours and one six. On the other hand, Jess Jonassen grabbed four wickets by conceding 22 runs in four overs for Australia.

India managed to put up a score of 154 runs by losing eight wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Australian batters were in trouble. Indian pacer, Renuka Singh came up with a great spell of four overs. She picked up four wickets by conceding 18 runs in four overs. But, the middle-order batters put up a great fight. Ashleigh Gardner scored an unbeaten fifty-plus knock as Australia women defeated India by three wickets. She remained unbeaten on 52 runs off 35 balls, including nine fours.

Despite having a good start with the ball, India failed to restrict Australia from chasing down the target. Australian women chased down the target in 19 overs only, with one more over to spare. Indian spinners failed to perform as per expectations and that cost them in this match. This win ensured a winning start for Australia while India will look to bounce back in the next match against Pakistan women.
