India batter Shreyas Iyer etched his name in record books and scored a memorable Test century on his debut innings in Kanpur against New Zealand. He brought up the landmark by scoring two runs of Kyle Jamieson in 92nd over of the innings on Day two of the ongoing first Test match. Iyer thus became the 16th Indian batter to score a ton in his first Test match. He also became only the third Indian player to score a century on debut against New Zealand.

It was an absolute masterclass from the Mumbai batter who came to the crease when India were at the spot of bother. Iyer consolidated on the situation and played sensible knock. There were few initial nervy moments but the elegant right-hand batter waded that tricky phase and kept the scoreboard moving. At the end of day one, Iyer had managed to reach a half-century and put India in a commanding position at 258 for four.

At the start of the second day, he lost Ravindra Jadeja and Saha early. However, Ravi Ashwin provided handy support with a useful cameo of 38 runs. Iyer kept playing his shots and took India to 345. Without the presence of a few senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, Iyer grabbed his opportunity with both hands and played a near-perfect innings.

The cricket fraternity lauded Iyer for his masterclass.
