Recently, India’s middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav became the number one T20I batter. It happened right ahead of the Super 12 game of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 between India and Bangladesh. He dethroned Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan from the position who is going through poor form with the bat. Notably, Yadav could have had an opportunity to become the number-one batter a few months back.

However, in the game against the West Indies in July this year, he was benched. This gave Rizwan ample of opportunity to become the best batter in the shortest format. Moving forward, Yadav is now the best batter in the format and is playing like that in the ongoing tournament. After the rare failure against Pakistan, he scored two fifties and a 30 in the next three games.

The inning of 30 runs came against Bangladesh in just 16 balls right after being crowned as the best batter. After the game, former India skipper Virat Kohli puts up an Instagram post captioned “Character & Conviction”. Suryakumar replied: “Fire hai”. After this, Kohli replied by saying  “@surya_14kumar bhau sabse upar #1”, which means ‘On top’.

In the ongoing tournament, Kohli and Yadav have forged some important partnerships. In the game against the Netherlands, they put together an unbeaten partnership of 95 runs to take the team to 179/2 on a slow wicket of the Sydney Cricket Ground. After the game, Yadav said that they share a great camaraderie and he enjoys batting with Virat

“It’s a very good camaraderie, and I’m really enjoying batting with him right now. He just clears your thoughts. I mean, when I was batting and when I was a little confused when I was inside, he was just coming up to me and telling me what delivery can you expect now from that bowler,” Surya said of his equation with Kohli after the Netherlands tie.
