Bangalore and Chennai locked horns in the 49th game of the ongoing Indian T20 League 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The defending champions won the toss and elected to field first. The three-time finalists had a good start as skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli stitched an opening partnership of 62 runs in 7.2 overs. Du Plessis was the first wicket to fall after scoring 22-ball 38, including four fours and a six.

He was caught at deep midwicket by Ravindra Jadeja off Moeen Ali. Glenn Maxwell (3) followed in the next over as he was run out. Kohli, who scored 33-ball 30 was clean bowled by Ali. From 62/0, the team went to 79/3 in no time. Rajat Patidar (21) and Mahipal Lomror stitched a partnership of 44 runs before the former was caught at deep square leg by Mukesh Choudhary off Dwaine Pretorius.

Three overs later, Lomror, who scored 42 off 27, including three fours and two sixes was caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad off Maheesh Theekshana on a full toss. Dinesh Karthik provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 26 off 17 and took the team to 173/8. Talking about the Yellow Brigade’s bowling, Theekshana took three wickets while Ali and Pretorius took two and one wicket respectively. In reply, the four-time winners had a good start.

Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway stitched a partnership of 54 runs in just 6.4 overs. Gaikwad (28) was caught at long on by substitute fielder Suyash Prabhudesai off Shahbaz Ahmed. In the next over, Prabhudesai took his second catch of the game, but this time, at the backward point. Robin Uthappa (1) tried to play a cut shot against Maxwell but found the fielder. Two overs later, Maxwell took his second wicket after disturbing the stumps of Ambati Rayudu (10), leaving Chennai at 75-3.

Conway (56 off 37) and Ali stitched a partnership of 34 runs before the former was caught at backward square leg by Ahmed off Wanindu Hasaranga. Ravindra Jadeja’s (3) poor form with the bat continued as he was caught at mid-off off Harshal Patel. Ali (34 off 27) who kept the winning hopes alive for the team fell to Patel. With him, the hopes of winning the died for the team. The team was restricted to 160/8, losing the game by 13 runs.
