On 9 September 2022, Pakistan took on Sri Lanka in the last match of the ‘Super Four’ of the Asia Cup. Both teams already qualified for the final. Hence, it was a dress rehearsal for the teams ahead of the final on 11 September. Both teams played a good quality of cricket so far in the tournament by eliminating Afghanistan and India from the tournament.

Eventually, Sri Lanka won the match by five wickets with three overs to spare. It was their all-round performance that helped them to continue their winning momentum. But, during Sri Lanka’s batting innings, an interesting thing happened. The on-field umpire signaled for DRS regarding a decision without taking permission from Babar Azam. The video went viral as the Pakistan skipper looked absolutely shocked.

Here is the shared video on Twitter:

Babar Azam looked very surprised by seeing such action from the on-field umpire in Asia Cup 2022

Speaking of the video, the incident took place on the 16th over. Hasan Ali came to bowl that over. For Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka were batting on that time. Hasan bowled a ball that Shanaka tried to hit. But, he missed as the ball ended in Mohammad Rizwan’s gloves.

However, Rizwan was very confident that Shanaka edged it while he tried to hit the ball. Hence, he appealed but the umpired denied it. Then, Rizwan signaled for DRS against that decision. In response to that, the umpire also asked the third umpire to look at the decision. But, it did not go well with Babar as the umpire did not ask for his permission. As per rules, the umpire needs to get the DRS signal from a team’s captain only. Babar Azam came up with a surprised face and it seemed like he told: ‘Captain main hun.’ (“I am the captain”). He also reminded the umpire that he needed to ask for permission from him, not Rizwan.

Eventually, the decision went in favour of Sri Lanka only. Thus, Dasun Shanaka remained not out. However, he lost his wicket to Hasnain after scoring 21 runs off 16 balls. Speaking of the match, Pakistan scored only 121 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka chased it down with five wickets in their bag. Wanindu Hasaranga won the player of the match for taking three wickets while bowling.
