A free hit in cricket can be very rewarding for the batting side, but it can be very costly for the bowling side. A similar situation occurred in a Women’s Big Bash League game between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers.

Piepa Cleary was given a free hit against Stars bowler Annabel Sutherland. However, Cleary was clean bowled while playing a ramp shot, but as luck would have it, the ball was so fast that it went to the boundary, giving the Perth Scorchers 4 runs.

As for the game, the Perth Scorchers battled the Melbourne Stars at the WACA Ground and came away with a thrilling win to remain unbeaten in the WBBL. They began with a strong bowling effort, limiting the Stars to 9-110. Piepa Cleary, Lilly Mills, and Taneale Peschel all took two wickets. For the Stars, Tess Flintoff hit 40 in 29 balls and was one of only two batters to score more than 20 runs.

Then, in the second innings, Melbourne retaliated with an outstanding bowling performance, reducing the Scorchers to 7-74 in the 16th over. However, with Perth needing 37 off 27, Amy Edgar and Piepa Clear held their nerve to help the Scorchers win by two wickets with two balls to spare.

This was also the Scorchers’ third victory in three games in the tournament. The Melbourne Stars, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat in three games. On Saturday, Perth will face the winless Sydney Thunder at the WACA Ground.
