Lucknow and Bangalore faced off in the 31st match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Bangalore was brilliant in all the departments of the game and won the match by 18 runs.

Lucknow won the toss and invited their opposition to bat first. On the back of skipper Faf du Plessis’ brilliant 96 off 64, Bangalore posted a formidable total of 181 runs in their 20 overs. During their chase, Lucknow was in contention till the 18th over of the innings with Marcus Stoinis at the crease.

Bangalore entrusted the job of bowling the 18th over to Josh Hazlewood. Stoinis was beginning to look dangerous batting at 24 off 13 deliveries at the stage. The Aussie bowler bowled the first ball of the over on a good length and tried to keep it out of Stoinis’ reach. But in his attempt to keep the ball away from the batter’s arc, Hazlewood bowled it way outside the tramline. Stoinis had shuffled outside his off stump but it appeared to be a genuine wide even then. But the man who matters the most, the umpire decided that the ball was a legal one and did not call it a wide to everyone’s surprise.

In the next delivery, Stoinis shuffled to about the sixth stump as the bowler’s plan to keep it out of his reach was evident. But Hazlewood was clever in bowling it closer to the stumps this time. This forced Stoinis to try and find a boundary in the leg-side, and in the process ended up deflecting the ball onto the stumps. This frustrated the Aussie all-rounder and he was seen abusing the umpire for his decision on the previous ball. The clip of Stoinis getting frustrated soon went viral on social media.

The dismissal of Stoinis was the turning point of the match. With an Indian T20 League 2022 career strike rate of 138, he could well have taken Lucknow home. But after his dismissal, the required equation proved too much for the remaining batting order of the team and they fell short of Bangalore’s title by 18 runs.
