In the 44th game of the ongoing Big Bash League 2022-23, table toppers from the bottom, Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat played each other. The game was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In the game, the seventh-placed Heat won the toss and elected to field first. They had a good start as they picked three wickets for 62 runs in 9.1 overs.

Matthew Renshaw, Spencer Johnson, and Michael Neser took one wicket each in this phase. Beau Webster and Nick Larkin stitched a partnership of 48 runs. The latter scored 36 before becoming the second victim of Neser. After a while, the home team, the Stars were reduced to six wickets for 127 runs. However, thanks to Larkin’s 58 off 36 balls ensured the team reached 159/7. For the former champions, Heat, Micheal Neser took four wickets.

In reply, the 2012-13 winners had a poor start as they lost four wickets for 59 runs in 8.1 overs. Josh Brown, Sam Hain, and Marnus Labuschagne failed to cross the double-digit mark. Skipper Usman Khawaja (14 off eight) had a great start but his innings ended abruptly. At this stage, Matthew Renshaw and Jimmy Pierson stitched a partnership of 66 runs to keep the team in the game.

The latter scored 22 off 18 balls before being caught behind by Clint Hinchliffe off Nathan Coulter-Nile. After this, Renshaw started losing partners at the other end as his team lost seven wickets for 148 runs in 18.2 overs. At this stage, the team needed 12 runs off 10 balls. However, Renshaw was the only recognized batter at one end. After scoring three singles in the over, the Teal brigade needed nine runs in six balls.

Beau Webster was given the last over of the game. He bowled wide and three dots to Renshaw and the team was in grave trouble. However, he managed to bring down the equation to four runs in one ball. The left-hander pulled off a scoop shot to score the winning runs.
