In the first game of the new year of the ongoing Big Bash League 2022-23, defending champions Perth Scorchers played Melbourne Renegades. The 2018-19 winners, the Renegades were coming off three straight defeats. On the other hand, the Scorchers were coming off a hat trick of wins. Meanwhile, during the game, Melbourne pacer, Kane Richardson pulled off a hulk-like celebration

The incident happened in the 10th over of Perth’s innings. Richardson bowled a normal-length delivery outside the off-stump. However, Faf du Plessis, who was facing the delivery was surprised by the bounce. The former South Africa skipper tried to defend the ball but could edge it to the keeper, Peter Handscomb. After this, Kane pulled off a hulk roar and the video of it is doing rounds on the internet

Talking about the game, the Red Brigade (Renegades) batted first after winning the toss at their home ground, Docklands Stadium. They had a poor start as skipper Nic Maddinson, Martin Guptill, and Handscomb got out to single-digit scores. At 32/3, former skipper Aaron Finch and Jonathan Wells put together 52 runs for the fourth wicket. The latter got out after scoring a 24-ball 22.

The 20-20 World Cup 2021 winning skipper scored 65 off 48 balls including six fours and two sixes. He was cleaned up by Andrew Tye. Meanwhile, thanks to Will Sutherland and West Indies international, Akeal Hosein provided the finishing touches and helped the team reach 155/6. For the Orange Army, Tye took three wickets while Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, and Peter Hatzoglou took one each.

In reply, the defending champions got a great start as Du Plessis (39) and Cameron Bancroft (46) provided a good platform after the tea lost the early wicket of Adam Lyth (2). Even though the Western Melbourne-base side picked quick wickets in the middle overs, they failed to defend the target. They lost the game by five wickets with two balls to spare. With this, the Nic Maddinson-led side suffered fourth straight defeat.
