Following a superb batting display, Australia rained down on Ireland’s bowlers at the Gabba. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc led the charge, picking up two wickets in his first over while giving up only one extra. Starc came in for the third over and promptly dismissed Curtis Campher for a duck.

Then, on the final ball of his over, the 32-year-old probably bowled the ball of the tournament, smashing through George Dockrell’s defence with an in-swinging yorker that shattered the stumps spectacularly. The video of the wicket has been doing rounds on the internet.

Here is Mitchell Starc’s brilliant yorker

As for the game, Australia faced an early hiccup with David Warner’s wicket but Aaron Finch kept the team alive. He scored a brilliant half-century to help his team get to a good total. The team captain scored 63 runs in 44 deliveries, with five fours and three sixes in the innings.

Marcus Stoinis (35 runs in 25 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (28 runs in 22 balls) also had small contributions to Australia’s total of 179/5. For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and Josh Little did all the heavy work with the ball, taking three and two wickets, respectively.

The defending champions made a strong start in the following innings, taking a few early wickets. The Irish team scored 49 runs during the powerplay but lost half of their wickets. The Australian bowlers kept the wickets in check, but Lorcan Tucker was stuck on one end.

The batter went on to complete his maiden half-century in the world cup. Meanwhile, wickets kept tumbling at one end, and nobody was able to support Tucker (71 runs in 48 balls). In the end, the Irish team was all-out for a score of 137 runs, handing Australia a 42-run win.

For the hosts of the World Cup, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc were the wreckers in chief, taking two wickets each. Marcus Stoinis also chipped in with one wicket in the match. With this win, Australia earned two points on the board/
