Mohammed Shami claimed a wicket on the very first ball of the ODI World Cup 2023. The Indian pacer dismissed Will Young of New Zealand in the first ball of the ninth over. As a result, India claimed the second wicket of the innings against New Zealand. The Indian supporters in the stadium praised the pacer for his brilliant comeback to the side.

Shami was brought into the attack as a first-change bowler by Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain attacked with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj with the new ball. The two pacers bowled well and gave nothing away for New Zealand. The batters had to manufacture their shots, which led to some crucial wickets for the team. Siraj claimed the wicket of Conway, thanks to a brilliant catch from Shreyas Iyer.

Shami was lethal with the ball as well. In his very first ball, Shami bowled a back-of-a-length delivery. As a result, the ball bounced a bit more. Will Young anticipated the ball to be in his range to hit. So, the right-hander went for a backfoot drive. However, the connection was not established. in the process, the ball took the inside edge of the willow and hit the stumps.

It was the second wicket of the innings for India. Shami stuck in his very first ball of the tournament for India. The Indian fans in the stadium were delighted. The players were delighted as well. Shami did not celebrate the wicket highly and went about his business. But the experienced pacer moved up the ranks to create a unique record for the Indian team in the ODI World Cup.

It was the 32nd wicket for Shami in the biggest ODI tournament. In the process, Shami became the third-highest wicket-taker for India in the ODI World Cup by surpassing Anil Kumble. The former Indian leg spinner had 31 wickets for his name. Shami has 32 to his name, only behind the likes of Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan from India.
