Big Bash League defending champions, Perth Scorchers are locking horns with former winners, Brisbane Heat at the Optus Stadium. In the game, the former winners, Heat won the toss and elected to bat first. The Jimmy Pierson-led side had a great start as Josh Brown scored all 25 runs in the first two overs and played every delivery. However, before he could do something big, he got out to David Payne.

At 25/1, Sam Heazlett and Nathan McSweeney put together 79 runs for the second wicket. Even though they failed to score a fifty, they laid a good platform for other batters. Max Bryant, who normally opens the batting, batted in the middle order and scored 31 off just 14 balls. His innings helped the team reach 175/7 at the end of the innings. For the defending champs, Jason Benhrendorff and Matthew Kelly took two wickets each.

On the other hand, David Payne, Aaron Hardie, and Andrew Tye took one each. In reply, the Scorchers had a fine start as openers, Stephen Eskinazi and Cameron Bancroft scored 32 runs in 4.2 overs. However, the former tried to take a risky single but didn’t give his best efforts to complete the run. Apparently, he forgot to slide his bat before the ball hit the stumps in the fifth over of the innings

Perth Scorchers defend their title in a thriller

Meanwhile, Perth had the opportunity to defend their title twice in the history of the league. In seasons three and four (2013-14 and 2014-15), the Orange Army won two back-to-back titles. They were interrupted by Melbourne Stars, who eventually lost the final of season five to Sydney Thunders.

Meanwhile, last year, they beat the then-two-time defending champions, Sydney Sixers to claim their third BBL title. In reply to Brisbane’s 175/7, the current BBL title holders lost three wickets for 54 runs. At this stage, the likes of Josh Inglis and Ashton Turner put together 80 runs to keep the team in the game. After the duo got out, the likes of Connor Connolly and Nick Hobson took the team over the line with five wickets in hand and four balls to spare.
