Netherlands international, Roelof van der Merve has shown that age is just a number. At 38 when most players consider retirement and moving towards the second chapter of their lives, Van der Merve is still playing. The former South Africa player is currently playing for Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) in the ongoing SA20 2023. In the game against Durban Super Giants (DSG), he displayed his immense athleticism.

In the ninth over of the DSGs inning, the left-arm spinner bowled to Jason Holder a little outside the off-stump. The latter, in pursuit of boundaries, tried to slog it over deep midwicket. However, the former West Indies skipper failed to reach the pitch of the ball and skewed the ball up in the air. With no fielder at midwicket inside the 30-yard circle, Van der Merve took it upon himself to take the catch.

Meanwhile, talking about the game, the home team, Sunrisers were asked to bat first as they lost the toss. However, the team made full use of this as they amassed 210/2. Batters such as Adam Rossington (72), Jordan Hermann (59), Aiden Markram (44*), and Tristan Stubbs (27*) helped the team reach such a total. In reply, the Super Giants had no answer to the six-wicket haul from Roelof. The Dutch player conceded only 20 runs in his four overs.

On the other hand, nine of the Durban batters failed to cross the double-digit mark. They were bowled out for 86 runs, losing the game by 124 runs.

Just hit my areas and was lucky to get those wickets: Roelof van der Merve

“Was very enjoyable. The vibe was unbelievable and the band brings a different vibe. Just hitting my areas and lucky it’s one of those nights when everything goes your way. I still enjoy playing the team game. I’d like to do it for a few more years and see how it lasts. Fortunate to play in front of this crowd at Gqeberha,” said Player of the Match, Roelof van der Merve.
