The ongoing game between England and Sri Lanka is vital for the Three Lions and Australia. Sri Lanka was already eliminated from the semis race by virtue of two losses and Afghanistan’s loss to Australia. From the Aussie perspective, they need Lankan Lions to win the game as their Net Run Rate is poor while England carried a healthy NRR.

Meanwhile, by the looks of it, Australia is all but out of the tournament. Batting first, the 2014 winners had a great start but could only finish 141/8 at the end of the innings. In reply, the 2010 winners had a dream start as the likes of skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales put together 75 runs in just 7.2 overs for the first wicket. The former’s innings ended with brilliance on the field.

Apparently, the England captain tried to slog the ball over the deep midwicket boundary. He couldn’t connect the ball well and was caught by Chamika Karunaratne.

Talking further about the game, the wicket of Buttler has triggered a bit of a collapse. From 75/0, they slipped to 111/5. However, the Lankan bowlers haven’t been able to assert their authority and have gotten wickets by the virtue of England batter’s mistakes. At the time of writing, the Red Brigade has scored 121/5 in 16 overs, needing 21 runs to win.

The win is highly likely for England unless they badly collapse. Their Test skipper, Ben Stokes, and Sam Curran are taking the game along. With every runs, the chance of Australia’s qualification is diminishing. If Australia gets eliminated (which is highly likely), they will continue the old tradition of the tournament. Apparently, no home team has won the 20-20 World Cup, and looks like Australia might carry the tradition.
