Kumar Dharmasena is known as a well-known umpire from Sri Lanka who has been doing such duties for a long time. He made his umpiring debut for T20Is and ODIs in 2009 while he made his debut in Tests in 2010. Now, he is currently busy umpiring in the first Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Galle.
But, a post on Twitter went viral as he commented on a girl’s picture “Beautiful”. In recent times, Dharmasena made some mistakes in matches. Kumar Dharmasena admitted his errors in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s
Speaking about his recent mistakes, Dharmasena admitted his errors in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s between England and New Zealand. He awarded England six runs from a freak overthrow in the last over of the World Cup final. But, speaking to Sunday Times, he admitted that he did not have the benefit of television replays that showed the batsmen had not crossed.
He said: “I agree that there was an error of judgement when I see it on TV replays now. But we did not have the luxury of TV replays on the ground and I do not regret the decision I made.” He even added that he took the final decision after consulting with other available match officials only. “So, I did consult the leg umpire (Erasmus) through the communication system which is heard by all other umpires and the match referee. While they cannot check TV replays, they all confirmed that the batsmen have completed the second run. This is when I made my decision.” Dharmasena concluded.
Speaking of his umpiring career, he umpired in 74 Tests, 118 ODIs, and 36 T20Is so far across all three formats.
