After the thrilling action in the two-match Test series, Pakistan and New Zealand locked horns in the first match of the three-match ODI series on Monday at National Stadium, Karachi. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first. 27-year-old Usama Mir was handed the debut cap for Pakistan and he began his ODI career in some style dismissing the kiwi captain Kane Williamson.

The incident took place on the second ball of the 15th over as he bowled a full delivery on the leg stump which turned sharply and beat the outside edge of Williamson’s bat to hit the top of the off-stump. The youngster even got acclamation from Williamson who contorted his face in appreciation.

Williamson has been going through a rough patch in ODIs since 2020. The Kiwi star last scored a hundred in the 2019 World Cup against West Indies at Manchester. He averaged 20 with in 2020 and scored just one half century in from six innings in 2022.

Coming back to the match, New Zealand opener Devon Conway failed to trouble the scorers as he got dismissed for a golden duck in the first over itself by Naseem Shah.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham take New Zealand out of early trouble

Finn Allen got a start to his innings but failed to convert it into a big score as he got dismissed by Mohammad Wasim Jr for 29. New Zealand then got their third blow as Usama Mir cleaned up Kane Williamson to claim his first wicket on his international debut.

Seeing wickets tumble, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham stitched a 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket. However, they couldn’t extend it further as Mohammad Nawaz cleaned up Mitchell.

New Zealand were 143/4 at the end of 30 overs with Tom Latham on 41* and Glen Phillips on 9*.

In terms of Cricket World Cup Super League Standings, New Zealand are placed on the second position with 130 points while Pakistan are on sixth position with 120 points. The top eight teams from the standings will directly qualify for the World Cup while the remaining teams will have to play in qualifiers.
