Washington Sundar has made a terrific comeback in international cricket in the ongoing first ODI against New Zealand. After dealing with injuries since India’s tour of Zimbabwe, the left-hander played a brilliant inning with the bat. Sundar came out to bat in the 46th over after Sanju Samson’s wicket. The former provided a great finish with the bat during the first innings.

The Tamil Nadu player hit an unbeaten 37 off just 16 balls including three fours and as many sixes. During this inning, he played a lap shot that has become the talk of the town. In the second last over of the innings, Sundar played a lap short shot over the fine leg while collapsing towards the wide line outside off-stump.

After the first innings, the former India U19 player spoke to the broadcaster. He said that he was able to execute what he practiced in the nets.

“All the work I put in worked today. There is some program that needs to be done before the ball is bowled, but there are instincts too… It’s very important to get the timing right, despite the power. It’s a par score,” Sundar said in the mid-innings.

The 23-year-old isn’t done in the game. He came out to bowl in the powerplay and has done well. At the time of writing, he has bowled five overs and has given only 12 runs. The right-arm slow bowler has applied breaks on the opposition’s scoring given the fact that straight boundaries in Auckland are way too short for a slow bowler.

Talking about the game, India amassed 306/7, thanks to half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Sundar’s cameo. In reply, New Zealand has lost three wickets and has scored 107 runs in 23.2 overs at the time of writing
