South African batter Aiden Markram has been appointed as the skipper of the Hyderabad franchise for the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League. Markram recently led Hyderabad’s sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the title in the inaugural season of the South African T20 League.

Hyderabad didn’t have a great outing in the previous two seasons. They finished in eighth position in the preceding season and finished last in the 2021 season. Markram was selected ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mayank Agarwal to lead the franchise in the upcoming season.

The 28-year-old was roped in by the Hyderabad franchise in the 2022 auction for INR 2.6 crore. He scored 381 runs in that season, with an average of 47.63. He became captain as Hyderabad released Kane Williamson ahead of the 2023 auction. Williamson was then picked up by the Gujarat franchise for INR 2 crore.

Markram also had a great season with the bat in the SA20, amassing 366 runs in 12 matches at an average of 33.27, striking at 127.97, with one half-century and a hundred against Johannesburg in the semi-finals. He also scaped 11 wickets with an economy of 6.19.

Indian T20 League to kickstart on March 31

Hyderabad were crowned champions in the year 2016 under the captaincy of David Warner. The franchise also consecutively reached playoffs in 2017, 2018, and 2019, making it into the finals of the 2018 season. However, they didn’t have a great outing in the previous two seasons and will be looking to get back on track under Markram.

The 16th edition of the Indian T20 League is all set to kickstart on March 31, with the opening match between the defending Champions Gujarat and Chennai at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The tournament will be played at 12 venues across the country, which will have a total of 74 matches.
